Cryogenic tempering has been researched and developed by NASA as well as many universities since the mid-sixties after discovering that deep space exploration vehicles had improved structural integrity after having been exposed to cryogenic temperatures for extended periods of time. Cryogenics alters the molecular structure of a variety of metals. This realignment of the molecules, enhances the performance of components making them more resistant to wear and breakage. In layman terms, cryogenic enhancement finishes what heat-treating started. Thermal Cycling enhances the component by converting the soft grain structure (Austenite) into a hard grain structure (Martensite). This tighter grain structure in turn provides better component performance by decreasing the resistance to wear and component drag. Machine cutting tools stay operational longer and the sharpening process requires less grinding. All cryogenic processes are not the same. Some companies performing cryogenic enhancement provide only shallow cryogenics of -120 degrees F. This will somewhat improve structural integrity over stock components, our thermal cycling takes it to the next step. Our Custom Thermal Cycling is a precise computer controlled operation, starting at ambient, the temperature is lowered to greater than -300 deg F. The component is then allowed to soak for a pre-determined period of time. Depending on the material and the desired results, the component is then taken through a specifically designed heat cycle to complete the Custom Thermal Cycling process. For years the cryogenic process has been very time consuming and costly but due to recent technological developments, it has become more affordable and cost effective for even the smallest of racing budgets. Peak performance and durability is vital to any racing
application not only to win but to prolong the life of engines and transmissions
as well as various other costly components, thus greatly reducing the overall
operating expenses of any race team. The brake rotor pictured to the left is on a BMW that Ponder Racing runs in the SCCA circuit. These rotors were Custom Thermal Cycled by Performance Cryogenics before the 2000 SCCA race season. At the time of the photo they had about 17 hours of hard SCCA circuit racing on them (5 races and other track time). Ponder Racing says that they are good for at least one more full SCCA race. Ponder normally gets about 4 hours of race time out of a standard rotor before the heat cracking and grooving is so bad they have to be replaced. The life of the Custom Thermal Cycled rotors has increased the life of the same standard rotors by over 400%. Ponder is a firm believer in the Custom Thermal process provided to him by Performance Cryogenics. PERFORMANCE CRYOGENICS is proud to service all levels of racing with equal dedication and attention to detail. Due to the highly competitive nature of racing, customer confidentiality is protected to ensure that our clients maintain the competitive edge they have worked so hard to obtain. We pride ourselves with dedicated personal service and rapid turn around times. As we all know... RACING PHOTOS DATA PRICING Email: race@percryo.com |
